Behaviour Management Policy - Tabitha Children Foundation

TABITHA CHILDREN FOUNDATION

Behaviour Management Policy

1. Introduction

At Tabitha Children Foundation, we believe that discipline is a vital part of child development. As a Christian-based institution, we are guided by biblical principles that emphasize correction with love. Our aim is to shape children’s behavior through teaching, guidance, and grace, not punishment or fear.

2. Purpose

This Behaviour Management Policy outlines the Foundation’s approach to guiding children's behavior, with the intent of nurturing respect, responsibility, and positive relationships. The objectives of this policy are to:

  • a. Establish a safe, respectful, and nurturing environment for all children
  • b. Ensure discipline practices are consistent with Christian values and legal requirements
  • c. Support children in developing self-discipline and moral character
  • d. Provide staff with clear procedures for managing behavior

3. Guiding Principles

  • Discipline should be instructive, not punitive
  • Children should be treated with dignity and respect at all times
  • Physical punishment is strictly prohibited by Kenyan law and by Tabitha Children Foundation
  • Love, empathy, and understanding are essential in every disciplinary action

4. Definition of Inappropriate Behavior

Inappropriate behavior may fall into two main categories:

  • Commission: Disrespectful or harmful actions such as defiance, verbal or physical aggression, or damaging property
  • Omission: Failure to complete assigned tasks or neglecting responsibilities

Children who repeatedly engage in inappropriate behavior will be supported with a personalized plan that includes behavioral guidance and counseling.

5. Basic Discipline Procedure

Our progressive approach to discipline includes:

  • Step 1: A clear verbal warning is issued.
  • Step 2: A time-out is given (one minute per year of the child’s age), always under adult supervision.
  • Step 3: Loss of a non-essential privilege (e.g., playtime or toys) for that day. Food and water are never used as punishment.
  • Step 4: If behavior persists, a written behavior plan is developed, and the child receives counseling.

6. Prohibited Disciplinary Actions

The following are strictly forbidden:

  • Any form of physical punishment or corporal discipline
  • Verbal abuse or humiliation
  • Deprivation of food, water, or basic care needs

7. Documentation and Review

The Director will maintain a written record of significant disciplinary actions, excluding minor verbal warnings. All plans and interventions will be recorded in the child’s personal file.

A behavior support team—including the Director, Chaplain, and Social Worker—will review serious or repeated concerns to determine additional support or interventions.

8. Conclusion

At Tabitha Children Foundation, we are committed to raising godly, respectful children in an environment of love, structure, and Christian values. Through intentional behavior management, we strive to develop children into confident, responsible individuals.
