My church ministry is located on
a High-way in the heart of a small town. Initially, the building operated as a
pub but we purchased the building and renovated it and transformed it into a
beautiful worship center. In this small town, there are four pubs and dozens of
dens of drugs peddling business.
There was no single church and I
saw children roaming on the streets and God spoke to me and bought a soccer
ball. We started playing soccer and after the match I’d tell them a bible
story. The girls were not left behind, my wife Sarah who is equally gifted with
children started meeting with little girls and would play handball and later
sing and learn bible verses.
I’ve seen how God is working
through this community. A lot of kids come to the church and learn the word of
God. We’ve more children than adults. That’s how our church was founded and we
give God all the glory.
Sarah and I are trying to reach
parents through their kids by bringing them closer and talking to them at
individual level. We enjoy working with children and it’s our joy to continue
serving in this ministry. The kids love listening to bible stories, and having
people who care and love them bring joy and smile to their faces. We’re like
parents to them, and since some are from single families, I stand in as a
father figure.
This small town due to its
proximity to the Highway is a hive of activities. The hawking and vendors’
business booms during the day. At night, prostitution, drug abuse and alcohol
consumption take center stage. Due to
these vices, family feuds are very common. The rental houses are one bedroomed
and the kids sleep on the cold floor. The girls learn about sex when they are
young. The kids are exposed to such life when they are still young, many of
them cannot concentrate in Sunday school and in school due to trauma they
experience.
Gender based violence is rampant
due to drugs and alcohol abuse. The victims are usually innocent children and
women.
Child evangelism and outreach is
helping many to know Christ and many kids and young people have come to accept
the gospel of Jesus Christ. There is a reason God put our church there and
though we’ve these challenges, the bright faces of these kids light up when
they come to church. We invite them to Sunday school and share snacks after
lessons and we play with them.
We do vocational bible
school(VBS) thrice a year which has had far reaching benefits to the children
around.
Tabitha foundation has set up
scheduled individualized and group counselling sessions for all affected
children and women. Most of the children are exposed to drugs, alcohol and
premarital sex. Cases of HIV cases are gradually increasing among the youths
who are between 13years and 25years.
Our passion in child evangelism
have borne fruits and we thank God that many of the children have heard the
gospel of love and compassion. The results may not be seen now, but in the near
future. I thank God that most of the parents allow the kids to come to Sunday
school. The kids don’t want to go home after church they just want to hang
around, they tell me they enjoy being in church. We thank God, the parents are able to send
the kids to us and some of the kids have been baptized and dedicated to
God.
Due to the continuous cycle of
poverty in this area, many children drop out of school at all stages. Tabitha
children foundation has come in to bridge this gap by providing meals and other
basic needs to ensure these poor children remain in school. Basic needs like
food, clothing and school fees are major challenges affecting these poor
children. Among the very needy cases, we’ve orphans who need alternative
shelter hence a need to have an orphanage to save the most vulnerable children.
This is my dream and passion for this ministry.
