Teenage pregnancies.
The girl- child is always under threats of dropping out of school, due to early teenage pregnancy and female genital mutilation(FGM). Many of them suffer rejection and negligence from their family and getting education is a challenge. For those who are lucky, they end up going up to Grade 8 with no college expectations.
Some of the girls, after attaining the adolescence age become easy targets for men who entice them with money and end up in sex trap. Some of the girls drop out of school due to early pregnancy and contraction of HIV virus hence the poverty cycle continues.
Sanitary Towels, & ARVs
Most girls who have attained menstruation age suffer from self-esteem as they cannot afford sanitary towels. Most of them use tattered rugs and toilet papers. During this time most girls drop off from school until the mensuration period is over. These girls are at greater risk by men who might exploit them by coercing them to have sex in return to getting the sanitary towels.
Lack of proper hygiene is a big problem to all school going children which contributes much to diseases and other health related conditions that hinder learning in schools.
Tabitha children foundation in collaboration with local dispensaries and Mission Hospitals has a volunteer based medical outreaches to tackle health issues affecting the children.
ARVs provision and lack of privacy contribute to poor management of affected and infected children. In public schools, HIV positive children are stigmatized which deter learning. Many are subject to public shame and humiliation. To curb and control this trend our ministry in collaboration with community health workers ensure privacy and confidentiality is adhered to. Tabitha ministry ensure these children are followed-up and given proper counselling.
My daughter Christine who is a trained Nurse does a wonderful job in ensuring that girls have sanitary towels and those taking ARVs are well followed-up to ensure they know their clinic appointments and ensure they don’t miss taking their drugs.
